Pillars and Meaning of Islam

As a Muslim, we should know our religion well. Because with Islam a person can achieve true and genuine happiness. A happiness that will not be obsolete in time and will never disappear wherever we are. A happiness that is very expensive that cannot be measured by the material world of any size. Therefore it is appropriate for us to study Islam, moreover the core part of Islam which is the pillar of this religion so that we can achieve happiness.

This is the Pillar

"Indeed there has come to you an Apostle from your own people, he feels the weight of your suffering, really wants (faith and safety) for you, very compassionate, merciful to the believers." (QS. At Tawba: 128)

Our Prophet has told us about this noble pillar of the Islamic religion. He said, which means, "Islam is built on five things: (1) Testimony that there is no god who has the right to be worshiped other than Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, (2) establishing prayer, (3) paying zakat, (4) going to Hajj to the baitullah, and (5) fasting in the month of Ramadan.” (Narrated by Bukhari Muslim)

Likewise when answering the question of the angel Gabriel who asked him, "O Muhammad! Tell me about Islam?” Then he replied, "Islam is that you testify that there is no god who has the right to be worshiped but Allah and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah, then you establish Salah prayer, then you give zakat, then you fast in Ramadan, then you perform Hajj if you can." Then when he was again asked by the angel Gabriel, "O Muhammad! Tell me about Faith?” Then he replied, "You believe in Allah, His angels, His book, His messenger, the last day and You believe in Allah's destiny, both good and bad." (HR. Muslim)

Thus our Prophet gives understanding to his people about Islam, what is Islam that we should practice? And how does one practice Islam? In this hadith we can conclude that Islam is an outward religious matter while faith is a matter related to the heart. So if the terms Iman and Islam are combined, this shows the essence of the religion of Islam, namely carrying out birth practices that are based on faith. If there are people who do Islamic practices but these actions are not based on faith, then this is called hypocrisy. Meanwhile, if there are people who claim to have faith but do not practice the commands of Allah and His Messenger, then this is what is called a disobedient person.

Based on this hadith we now know that this religion of Islam is built on five pillars:

  1. Testimony about the two sentences of the creed that there is no one who has the right to be worshiped but Allah and that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah (Shahada).
  2. Establish prayer (Salah).
  3. Pay zakat.
  4. Fasting in the month of Ramadan.
  5. Go on pilgrimage to the holy land if you can (Hajj).

And these five things are called the Pillars of Islam which are the main pillars of the upholding of Islam. Whoever works on these five pillars, then he has the right to get the promise of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in the form of His heaven which is full of pleasures.

Islamic meaning

If we hear the word Islam, then there are two meanings that we can take. The first definition of Islam is Islam in general which has the meaning: Surrender to Allah with monotheism and submission and obedience to Allah by obeying Him and breaking free from associating partners with Allah (shirk) and breaking away from those who associate partners with Allah (mushrik) ). Islam with this general meaning is the religion of all the Prophets since Prophet Adam 'alaihi salam. So if asked, what is the religion of the prophets Adam, Noah, Musa, Jesus the prophet and other Prophets? Then the answer is that their religion is Islam with the meaning of Islam in general as mentioned above. Likewise, the religion of the followers of the Prophets and Apostles before the Prophet Muhammad shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam is Islam with the above understanding, the followers of the previous Prophets and Apostles surrendered to Allah with monotheism, submitted and obeyed Him by doing good deeds according to the Shari'a. brought by the prophets and Apostles who they follow and free themselves from polytheism and those who commit shirk. The religion of the followers of the prophet Noah was Islam, the religion of the followers of the prophet Musa in his time was Islam, the religion of the followers of the prophet Isa in his time was Islam and similarly the religion of the followers of the prophet Muhammad in this era is Islam. Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says,

"Ibrahim is not a Jew and not (nor) a Christian, but he is a straight man who surrenders (to Allah) and he is not one of the polytheists." (QS. Ali Imran: 67)

Allah also said,

هُوَ سَمَّاكُمُ الْمُسْلِمينَ مِن قَبْلُ

"He (Allah) has named you all Muslims long ago." (QS. Al-Hajj: 78)

While the second meaning is the meaning of Islam in particular, namely: the religion of Islam brought by the Prophet Muhammad shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam, which includes the Shari'a and all the teachings brought by the Prophet Muhammad shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam. And this is the absolute meaning of Islam, meaning that if it says "Religion of Islam" without any frills, then what is meant by "Religion of Islam" is the religion of Islam brought by the prophet Muhammad shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam. So that people who still follow the teachings of the prophet Noah, the prophet Musa or the teachings of the prophet Isa after the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam was sent, this person is not called a Muslim who is Muslim. In addition, there is a linguistic understanding of Islam, namely Istislam which means surrender.
